Before Andrea Bocelli became famous for his incredible voice, his family were known for producing beautiful wines. For almost three centuries the family has produced a range of classic Italian wines on their small Tuscany vineyard.
Bocelli family wines are known for rich and vibrant flavors and have long been a recognizable wine of choice for the discerning Italian and international wine Connoisseurs. Now also available in Australia at the finest of restaurants and here at The Goods Tube through a special collaboration for this year’s Mother’s Day gift range.
The Bocelli Traditions
The Bocelli family farm was set up in 1730 by Bartolomeo Bocelli who worked the land with great dedication, cultivating grains, animals, honey, olive oil, and of course, wine. In the 1930’s, Alcide Bocelli, the grandfather of Andrea, became increasingly serious about expanding the vineyards and modernising the operation. He made the wine, grew the wheat and branded the cattle with his initials AB. When his son was born, the practical and humorous pappa decided to name his boy Alessandro Bocelli, in part so he wouldn’t have to change the AB brand on all his cattle. The work on the family farm was continued by Alessandro and his wife Edi, who in turn, when they had two sons, decided to run with the tradition, and named their sons Andrea and Alberto, keeping the AB tradition alive.
Both boys grew up on the farm and learnt to raise animals, grow grains, ride horses, and most importantly, make wine. Despite having his sight impaired from birth, and ultimately losing it as a young boy, Andrea threw himself into his family’s estate with a full passion. Alberto, his younger brother and closest friend, was his constant companion, and together, the two young men worked hard, played hard, and learned the ways of their farm. They helped fill their family table with farm-fresh food, classic Tuscan red wine, and yes, music.
It has always been a true family affair and continues to be so with Alberto and his wife now managing the day to day running of the vineyard, and with Edi Bocelli, aka “Mamma”, still enjoying working in the fields, carefully hand-tying vines. With the help of Andrea Bocelli, they welcome visitors from around the world to taste their exceptional wines.
Andrea lived on the farm until he was 35 but has since moved to the coast together with his wife Veronica and young daughter Virginia. Busy touring and singing on stages around the world, he is still with his heart and soul very involved in the family business and proud of sharing their family product : “When I return home after my long trips, the joy that I receive from the taste of wine from my land is hard to match. It brings me back in time, to memories of my father, of him pouring the wine with a quasi-religious respect. I would give anything for him to see what has been accomplished in the past few years. I am sure he would be proud… It is now my honor to be an ambassador for these wines; and to do so with the same zeal as my voice.”
Bocelli Family Wines
The winery has old vines (well over 70+ years), and has grown classic Tuscan varietals such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia and Trebbiano. All wines were produced primarily for local consumption, but in 2000 a decision was made to lift wine quality and the family also started branching out to other markets, the US, China and also Australia. In 2011, for the very first time, the Bocelli family expanded its production through partnerships with other exceptional growers, and hand-selected some of the best sites in Italy to produce a fresh, easy-to-drink Sangiovese, and a light and playful Prosecco, a grape that is indigenous to the Veneto region, in a collaboration with Trevisiol, the ‘first family of Prosecco’. Together they have created a delightful sparkling wine, a staple of everyday Italian celebration with subtle flower and fruit aromas that make the palate deliciously light and playful with a peachy softness. All Bocelli Family Wines are hand-harvested, without irrigation, and use no pesticides or chemical agents.
Andrea Bocelli Foundation
Andrea is currently on a global tour in support of his critically acclaimed album Cinema as well as holding events in support of the work of the Andrea Bocelli Foundation - another passion of the Bocelli family. The Andrea Bocelli Foundation’s “Break the Barriers” – FIGHTING POVERTY program operates to support and promote projects that help the weaker classes of the population in Italy and in Developing Countries in which conditions of poverty, illnesses, malnutrition and complex social situations nullify or reduce their expectations of life. The Foundation has also launched a collaboration with MIT called “Challenges” which operates in the field of scientific and technological research and social innovation. This program brings together the best minds to find innovative solutions to help people cope with and overcome limitations imposed by their disability and contribute to improving the living conditions of many people.
